The Methodology Used by Our Board-Certified Physicians in Oklahoma

The foundational tenets, methods, and best practices established by the American Academy of Physician Life Care Planners were formally introduced in 2017 through A Physician’s Guide to Life Care Planning: Tenets, Methods, and Best Practices for Physician Life Care Planners. This peer-reviewed framework is widely recognized within the field of life care planning and is routinely applied in practice. It has been relied upon in thousands of state and federal court cases across the United States, supporting its credibility and consistent use in legal settings. Training based on this methodology is independently reviewed by the International Commission on Health Care Certification (ICHCC), the organization responsible for overseeing the Certified Life Care Planner (CLCP™) credential—the oldest and most widely held certification in the profession.

The ICHCC also evaluates and accepts life care plans developed under these standards as part of the certification process for CLCP™ candidates. In addition, CLCP™ certification holders who complete this training are eligible to receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through the ICHCC. This methodology is also reviewed and accepted by the American Medical Association (AMA), in partnership with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Physicians who complete this training are awarded the AMA’s highest level of Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, reflecting the rigor and clinical relevance of the program.

What Are the Clinical Objectives of a Life Care Plan?

In alignment with the peer-reviewed standards established by the American Academy of Physician Life Care Planners, life care planning is guided by several core clinical objectives:

  1. Diminish or eliminate physical and psychological pain and suffering
  2. Reach and maintain the highest level of function given an individual's unique circumstance
  3. Prevent complications to which an individual's unique physical and mental conditions predispose them
  4. Afford the individual the best possible quality of life in light of their condition
